IND vs ENG: Virat Kohli baffled with choices for match and series accolades

India completed a landmark series victory over number one ranked side England in Pune. In a series that heavily favoured the batsmen, it was not surprising that the decider headed in the same direction. The 50-over leg recorded the highest number of sixes in a series with three matches.

The hosts were able to overcome a late surge by all-rounder Sam Curran, who scripted history with his unbeaten 95-run knock. He was awarded the man of the match for his exploits which nearly took England to victory while Jonny Bairstow was bestowed with the man of the series award after scoring 219 runs.

During the post-match presentation, Kohli expressed his disappointment with the choices made for the award. The Indian skipper strongly felt that Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar should have received the awards since they managed to excel despite the conditions being against their favour.

“I’m surprised Shardul wasn’t the man of the match, and Bhuvi wasn’t the man of the series. A lot of credit to them for bowling so well in adverse conditions,” Kohli said

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has made a strong return back to the side after recovering from his injury. Being the most experienced bowler in the side at the moment, the medium-pacer lived up to the tag with his reliability over the course of the limited-overs leg of the tour.  He took six wickets in the series at an economy rate of 4.65 and an average of 22.50.

Shardul Thakur, on the other hand, played a vital role across both the innings. He chipped in with a handy 30-run cameo before claiming a four-wicket haul later on. His scalps included the key wickets of Dawid Malan, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Adil Rashid.

Kohli, who led the team to victory in his 200th game as captain, lauded the effort by the team and termed the season as amazing overall.

“This win has been sweet because it’s against the top team in the world, and we’re looking forward to the IPL. It’s been an amazing season, series, and this was a great way to finish it off.” Kohli concluded.
